What is Rambutan?

Let’s start with the basics. Rambutan is a tropical fruit from Southeast Asia, and it’s closely related to lychee and longan, two more of my favorite fruits! The name “rambutan” comes from the Malay word for hair, which makes sense once you look at its hairy, spiky shell. But don’t let face value scare you away—inside is a super juicy fruit that’s sweet, a little tangy, and full of flavor.

What Does Rambutan Taste Like?

So, what exactly does rambutan taste like? The best way to describe it is if a lychee and a grape had a baby, with a sweet, mildly tart flavor. The flesh is really juicy and tender, with a texture that’s similar to a grape but slightly firmer. If you love tropical fruits, you’ll love Rambutan.. It’s taste is both refreshing and satisfying, so it can be the perfect snack or addition to your favorite fruit salad, or dessert! Plus, I have some ideas below for some savory ways to use it also!

Health Benefits of Rambutan

Rambutan isn’t just tasty—it’s also packed with health benefits. It’s a great source of vitamin C, which helps boost your immune system, and it’s rich in fiber, which aids digestion. Plus, rambutan contains antioxidants that help protect your body from free radicals. So, not only does rambutan taste great, but it’s also good for you!

When and Where to Find Rambutan

Rambutan is typically in season during the summer months, from June through August, although you can sometimes find it year-round depending on your location. It’s well into September, and I was able to find Rambutan at my local 99Ranch market for $2.79/lb!!  Your best bet for finding fresh rambutan is at Asian markets, but it’s also becoming more common in specialty grocery stores and even some larger supermarkets. I’ve seen it  before at Whole Foods also. When choosing rambutan, look for fruits that are bright red and vibrant, as those are the freshest.  And you can always find canned Rambutan here on Amazon.

How to Enjoy the Taste of Rambutan

Ready to try rambutan? Here’s how you can enjoy its delicious taste:

  1. Cut: Make a shallow cut around the middle of the fruit with a knife.
  2. Peel: Gently peel away the spiky skin to reveal the juicy flesh inside.
  3. Eat: Pop the fruit into your mouth and enjoy! Just be sure to remove the seed in the center before eating.

Rambutan can be enjoyed on its own as a refreshing snack, or you can get creative and add it to fruit salads, smoothies, or even as a topping for yogurt and desserts.
